Equatorial Guinea, the only independent Spanish-speaking African country
Equatorial Guinea, whose official name is the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, is part of Middle or Central Africa. The country’s capital, the city of Malabo is located in the outlying island of Bioko. While the country is small at only 28,000 square kilometers or 11,000 square miles compared to other African nations, it is one of the richest per capita. The country’s GDP/PPP in 2010 was estimated to be around $24.146 billion, with a per capita of $34,824. It is unfortunate that the wealth distribution in the country is currently uneven, with a large portion of the population still living in poverty.
The country’s economy, which was previously reliant on its cocoa production and other industries, was given a major boost by the discovery of sizeable oil reserves in 1996. The new economic prosperity brought in migrant workers and expatriates to work in the growing petroleum industry of Equatorial Guinea.
Linguistically, the country is very diverse, although Spanish, due to the country being under Spain for 190 years, is the official language. English and German are taught in school as foreign languages, while there are a number of Portuguese and French speakers in Equatorial Guinea. The country’s ethnic population, which is composed of Fang, Bubi, Ndowe, Annobon and Bujeba also speak their own local languages, and retain and practice many of their customs and traditions. With this language diversity in the country, the services of a professional translation and interpretation company is frequently needed.

About the City of Malabo
The city of Malabo is located in the island of Bioko, which is a part of Equatorial Guinea in central West Africa. The city stands as the nation’s capital since 1969. It is located along the northern coast of the crescent-shaped top of the island, facing the waters of Malabo Bay. The highly cosmopolitan city is now a rich oil town, and despite the disparity in wealth distribution, has potentials for greater growth.
The island of Bioko where Malabo is located was discovered in 1472 by a Portuguese explorer, Fernão do Pó. Enamored by the island’s beauty, he gave it the name Formosa, which is Portuguese means beautiful isle. However, the residents of the island soon named their home to the person who discovered it, giving it the name of Fernando Pó. It became a colony of Portugal in 1474. In exchange for some territories in the Americas, the island, the mainland and other areas were ceded to Spain in 1778 and Equatorial Guinea came under Spanish rule until 1968. Slavery was rampant around the region during that time and Britain leased part of the island to curb the slave trade. Fernandinos or the freed slaves settled in the region that was established by the British, the city of Malabo, starting in 1827. Before it became known as Malabo, the established city was given the name of Port Clarence by the British.
When Spain regained control of the island, Port Clarence’s name was changed to Santa Isabel. The name Malabo was only used in 1973 after it gained independence from Spain.
In spite of being an oil boomtown, the city of Malabo still needs a lot of restructuring to become at par with other established cities. The city still needs to improve its infrastructure. Currently there are just about a hundred paved streets and the glorious colonial Spanish buildings need to be refurbished and renovated, to increase tourism. Paved roads increase commerce and the city could gain additional prominence as it has several industries that contribute to the city’s as well as the country’s economy.
“Malabo is a charming city with many Spanish colonial structures. It has a thriving international community, local entertainment and the arts that are worth a look. The best time to visit the city is from December to February when the weather and the climate are at their most favorable.”
