About Mexico City, Mexico
Valle de México had its initial human settlers as far back as 30,000 BC while the area was still largely under water. When the water receded, the inhabitants made agriculture their main source of livelihood. As the community evolved, so do their technology. There were able to harness the water to irrigate the lands and planted maize, which become the basis of their economy, which gave rise to the Teotihuacán civilization. This empire grew so large that it reached Guatemala but the empire was not able to sustain the growing population and collapsed. Eventually the nomadic tribes began to encroach on the lands and built the empire of Tula. The Aztecs rose to dominate the region when the Tula Empire also suffered the same fate as the Teotihuacán.
The sophisticated group of people planned the settlement in grids, creating canals and causeways, temples and dwellings. They created raised gardens and protected the embankment by planting trees, exacted levies from the other tribes they conquered and started gathering products from the earth, such as precious minerals like turquoise and jade as well as agriculture products including cotton, tobacco, rubber, paper, vegetables, fruits and cacao. They also gathered precious feathers. All these they use to feed the growing population, for trade and for glorifying their gods.
When the Spanish arrived in 1519 they saw an advanced and organized civilization with a thriving economy, although they were no match for the diseases brought by the Europeans. The region was under Spanish rule for three centuries before gaining independence in the early part of the 19th century; hence the strong Spanish culture still evident in México City.
Traditional attire for Mexican men basically consists of shirt and trousers and boots, as well as the ubiquitous serape, a type of large blanket. The women on the other hand usually wear a sleeveless tunic over a skirt, with the shoulders covered by a quechuemitl cape and a rezobo shawl that could be used to cover the head. It is to be noted however that different and more colorful attires are worn depending on the occasion, including the costumes worn by the mariachis, complete with the overly large sombrero churro that is one of the more known icons of México.
“Present-day México City is located in the Valle de México, also called the Valley of the Damned. The elevated location is 2,240 meters of 7,349 feet above the level of the sea, and covers an area of about 1,485 square kilometers or 571 square miles. The summers are hot in the city, while the winters are generally mild. May is the warmest month of the year while January is the coldest. The period between June and October are the months when rainfall usually occurs.”
